Introduction

Welcome to our Spear Greatsword PVP build guide for Throne and Liberty. This guide focuses on the PVP set-up for Spear Greatsword and how to play it. The weapon combination forms the “Gladiator” Class.

Skills

Below are the Skills and Specializations we recommend for the Spear Greatsword PVP Build. This includes Large Scale and Small Scale:

ALL PVP (PVP Boss, GVG, Castle Siege, Events, Arena)

The Spear Greatsword set-up is pretty straight forward. The build is pretty locked in for a specific playstyle in most content. In this case, it is served best as a skirmisher with assassination potential and AoE potential through the use of Javelin Inferno.

Specializations

With 100 total points to play with once you hit Level 50, below is our recommended Specializations for the Spear Greatsword build for Large Scale PVP:

Every Specialization helps towards locking down targets, dealing damage to targets while stacking your Javelin ammo, and assassinating locked down targets. For smaller scale PVP such as Arena, aim to remove more of the cleave/AoE type specializations and invest more into survivability, cooldown and other utilities.

See our Skill Specializations guide for more information.

Weapon Mastery

This guide assumes you are at least in the range of Level 13-16 Weapon Mastery. However, if you’re below this threshold, it’s not an issue. Simply spec into the mastery trees that provide the most damage first.

Stats

Stats once you reach Tier 1 Epic gear can vary frequently due to stats built into gear. As a result, try to push for at least 60 Dexterity and 50 Strength while participating in PVP – gear depending. Below is our recommended baseline Stat allocation:

  • Strength – 19 Points
  • Dexterity – 20 Points
  • Perception – 10 Points

Gear & Equipment

The gear loadout largely, if not entirely, stays the same across all content once you reach Tier 1 Epic. Our Tier 1 Epic set assumes that most of the base content has been unlocked with the Milestones completed.

Archboss weapons are a great bonus to any build, however, do not feel any pressure to obtain them. They’re not mandatory, no matter how cool they are!

Runes are set-up to push our Melee Evasion threshold higher and increase our base Hit chance. Finally, we round out the supportive side with increased Amitoi Healing and Skill Damage resistance where possible. We opted for a Melee Evasion focused gearset for ease of access to the gear and the flexibility between Arena and larger scale PVP usage. Typically, the only weapons stopping you from deleting your target in PVP is melee, as a result, Melee Evasion helps you finish your task.

For a guide on early progression, see our 1-50 leveling guide for Spear Greatsword.

Guardian

Guardians are a unique transformation on a 10 minute Cooldown that gives powerful bonuses to you for 30 seconds. Some Guardians work as an additional “Active” Skill, while others provide buffs. We recommend the following Guardians for PVP:

  • Pale Nemesis Hartach – Hartach is as close as you can get to a Tevent’s Fangs of Fury-style effect. This Guardian requires a bit more knowledge and skill to pull off. However, if you can utilize it well, it doubles as a strong defensive and offensive Guardian.
  • Lady Knight Kamarshea – This Guardian is a fantastic safety net, just incase you’re taking too much damage on an engage. You’ll also get a huge amount of Cooldown Speed too.

How to Play the Spear Greatsword PVP Build

The Spear Greatsword build is the best of both worlds, you’re able to play up-close as a skirmisher-come-assassin, and from afar with potent Javelins. As a result, you’ll need to master managing both sides of the kit to shine in PVP.

For PVP, this weapon combination is best used fighting on the edges of large scale PVP, rather in the large alliance blobs clashing into each other. As a result, finding targets or more party-based fights is ideal. Through the use of Precision Dash, Devastating Smash, Stunning Blow, Ascension Slash and Tempest Strike – you’ll have no trouble locking your target(s) down.

A final key attribute of the build to learn is how to best weave your Skills for optimal CC and Damage potential. For example, binding a target with Precision Dash, putting them Prone with Ascension Slash and then charging a full power Guillotine Blade to potentially 1-hit-kill a target.

Large Scale Rotation

Below is a quick but straight forward AoE rotation for large scale PVP:

  • DaVinci’s Courage
  • Death from Above
  • Unyielding Sentinel
  • Devastating Smash
  • Frost Cleaving
  • Phoenix Barrage
  • Explosive Fury x5 (unless you already have 5 javelins stacked)
  • Javelin Inferno x5 (or as many as you can with ammo resets)

Skills such as Frost Cleaving and Death from Above can be added to your Skillbar if you’re insistent on being more of an AoE dive-bomber. However, we recommend leaning into this playstyle more if you manage to obtain the Archboss weapon Tevent’s Warblade of Despair. This combo allows you to get in, CC multiple targets, blast them with AoE and hopefully get out (or at least take many with you).

Small Scale Rotations

A very straight forward single-target kill rotation is as follows:

  • DaVinci’s Courage
  • Unyielding Sentinel
  • Precision Dash
  • Stunning Blow
  • Phoenix Barrage
  • Ascension Slash
  • Guillotine Blade (Fully Charged)
  • Devastating Smash
  • Tempest Strike
  • Explosive Fury x5
  • Rising Slash
  • Javelin Inferno (if you need to clean up)

This rotation involves weaving Crowd Controls into your standard arrangement to ensure your target remains locked down for you to hit and not respond to you. Each time you use a Crowd Control you’ll want to remember how long you have and what damage Skills you can fit in before you have to use another Crowd Control to lock the opponent down further. For example, you have more than enough time to Stunning Blow, Phoenix Barrage and then Prone a player with Ascension Slash before the Stun is over.
